Scaling Up Biochar Applications for Accelerated Stormwater Runoff Reduction in the Chesapeake Bay
Our mission at Scaling Up Biochar is to foster a sustainable future by accelerating the application of biochar amendments in urban landscapes, with the ultimate goal of reducing runoff and enhancing water quality across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The project's primary goal is to accelerate runoff reduction and improve water quality by enhancing existing Best Management Practice (BMP) performance using biochar amendment in proposed new projects and as a retrofit to existing practices.
Empowering Sustainable Urban Landscapes with Biochar
The goal of this project is to accelerate the rate and scale of biochar amendment applications in urban areas within the Chesapeake Bay watershed to support runoff reduction and improved water quality. This goal will be accomplished through:
Maturing the BPC Structure
Providing evidence and support for biochar amendment specifications and crediting by regulatory agencies.
Education & Outreach
Deliver comprehensive education about the many benefits of biochar, increasing understanding and adoption of this sustainable resource.
Securing Implementation Partners
The creation of a Community of Practice that provides agencies, researchers, and organizations access to resources and expertise to help them develop and operate biochar projects
Technical Assistance
Providing technical assistance to implementation partners for sourcing certified, quality biochar along with specifications for the use, installation, and maintenance of biochar-amended projects

Community of Practice
At Scaling Up Biochar we believe in the power of collaboration, shared knowledge, and continuous learning. That's why we have created a vibrant and inclusive Community of Practice. But what exactly is a Community of Practice, and why is it so important?
A Community of Practice (CoP) is a dynamic group of individuals and organizations who share a common interest in a topic, profession, or expertise and come together to learn, exchange ideas, and solve problems.
A Community of Practice (CoP) is particularly crucial during the early stages of adopting an industry, such as biochar.
Knowledge Sharing
A Community of Practice provides a platform for professionals to share their insights, experiences and best practices. It's a collaborative ecosystem where everyone has a voice and contributes to the community's collective wisdom. By exchanging knowledge, individuals can collectively build a repository of biochar and stormwater industry-specific expertise, accelerating the use of biochar in the Chesapeake Bay.
Networking & Partnerships
A Community of Practice offers opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, industry leaders and potential partners. These connections can lead to valuable collaborations, joint ventures, and shared resources that support the growth and development of the industry as a whole.
Standardization & Quality Assurance
Establishing standards and ensuring quality are essential factors for the credibility and sustainability using biochar in the Chesapeake. Communities of Practice can play apivotal role in defining and refining criteria, sharing best practices and establishing quality benchmarks. This collaborative effort ensures that the industry evolves in a cohesive manner, enhancing its reputation and fostering trust among stakeholders.
Advocacy & Influence
A Community of Practice can serve as a unified voice for the biochar industry, advocating relevant regulations and market dynamics. By coming together, professionals can leverage their collective expertise and industry knowledge to shape the industry's future direction, address challenges, and drive positive change in the Chesapeake Bay.
The power of our CoP lies in its people — professionals like you who are passionate, dedicated, and eager to make a difference in the Chesapeake Bay.
